Puppet Workshops in Bridgend

06/12/2013

Last month we held two fantastic workshops at Tremains primary school in Pencoed, Bridgend.

We started in the morning with one of the infants classes who had been busy studying the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?  that week.  With this in mind, we thought we would hold a puppet making workshop where the pupils had the opportunity to make brown bear sock puppets and then to join in with some songs about Brown Bear using a variety of musical instruments. The pupils really enjoyed this session, particularly the part where they got to try out all the instruments – the chimes, glockenspiel and bongo drum being their particular favourites!

In the afternoon we worked with another class who had been studying the Hindu festival Diwali and the traditional Hindu story of Rama and Sita.  This gave us the perfect opportunity to get really creative with our puppet making workshop, and help boys in the class to make King Rama puppets and girls to make puppets of princess Sita. We challenged this class to make the more intricate rod puppets and this really paid off!  The class participated brilliantly in making their puppets, which took lots of focus, concentration and skill to perfect the complex puppet design.  Once their puppets were made, the class took part in a performance of the story of Rama and Sita, using their very own puppets, and including some wonderful musical accompaniment!  The children’s puppets were later put on display on the classroom wall for everyone to see.

Mr Maybery the class teacher said: “can I say a BIG THANKYOU to you and Follow Your Dreams for coming into school for our fantastic puppet making workshop. The children are so proud of their achievement and all staff around the school have been commenting how fantastic their puppets are. I think it’s really given them a boost in confidence!!”

We would like to thank everyone at Tremains School for helping us have such a lovely day there, and also to our supporters in the area such as ASDA Bridgend, Pencoed Co-op and Nathaniel Cars for helping to make these events possible.
